Do not do not do not pull like that with your trailer hitch especially importand when recovering vehicles. Do yourself a favor and go on the web and find a video of someone getting a moon roof in their skull from a flying trailer hitch, they make hitch attatchments for that. Dont cheap out 40 bucks and 2 mins to swap the hitch could be the difference between getting out or staying there, like forever 💀

Both are tough trucks. I have owned both. 460 will wind up and pull hard from the bottom to redline. And get 5mpg with a heavy load. 7.3 takes a bit to get them going but once turbo is spooled at 2,500rpm. You can't pull em down. 11mpg doing it. Looks like 7.3 has a bit of advanced in the front. The old 460 is stout.

Should have compared the 460 and the 6.9 IDI Would have been period-correct. But thank you for the comparison! Now I know the better engine!

This is hilarious.. Those POS diesels are not what people think when it comes down to it. They can have them gas pickups are a lot better for cost and maintenance ..

That's just a tire diff at that point. They're in general pretty close stock in torque but the 460 has the HP advantage. I have a 7.3, a 6.0, a 460, a swapped in a mild built 4.9 inline six, for 4 of my pick-ups, all f250s. I also have a built 351w in one and a coyote in a few f150s. All OBS and Dentside swaps. And honestly for towing my 460 absolutely walks everything else. It's 10-12 mpg no matter if I'm towing or not. My 4.9 has a cam and turbo and gets better daily mpg, around 22-24 but under load takes a dive to around 12mpg with about 2k less load than my 460. Both my diesels come in around 17-19mpg daily and around 10mpg on big loads. My 351w is a power monster but it doesn't hit peak til about 3800 for ftlbs. It's around a 10mpg pig all around because of the way it is. My coyotes are a little better mpg-wise than my Windsor but very similar in power. When I have a huge load and I need to grab the keys to one of em, if it's home I grab my 460 keys most of the time. It just works. It doesn't care what you're doing. I don't have to worry about oil, egts, nothing really, it just goes and pulls the mountains I live around no issue. Next inline is either diesel and honestly if the load isn't insane I'm taking my 4.9l. It's power delivery is so smooth and I get better fuel economy on the way to my trailer. I'm not afraid to punish my gassers either because they are way cheaper to maintain. Best overall daily are the coyote though. That's just tech advancement and overall efficiency. I'm not a diesel or gas snob, I work them all hard. It's just picking the right tool for the job.

I’m just happy to have a American truck Iv had both if Going for mpg and pulling in a diesel I want a 5.9 Cummins first gen but cost a lot and are hard to find in good shape But iv had a lot of 460 trucks and sure they are not great on mpg but they are tuff and last long enough cost 4-5k to completely rebuild them so if it last 300k miles then I can afford to rebuild 2 to a single diesel engine so if the diesel last 500-600k miles then it’s all a wash in the end money does matter and for me I don’t have a lot at one time so that’s why I’m mostly a gas engine guy lol just the truth

I would choose the 460 looks like the 7.3 has slightly more torque at lower rpms. Anyway both are good engines. I would like to see the Chevy 366 engine compete against these in a light duty truck

I have a 1997 35.5 ft long class A motorhome with the 460 in it.. had a newer dodge truck try to screw with me one night he went to pass me thinking he was gonna blow right by me and then I was able to stay right with him lol. This big motorhome has more than enough power to make it up mountain passes without slowing down and can defiantly pull some weight!!! Like the 5.4 omg that thing can pull too!!

I had an 87/88 f350 with the 460 and 5 spd w od and that thing would go up a mountain in first gear and although it had a big grain body dump it would float down the highway at a 100 mph with ease like a caddy or town car and it felt like you were only going 55 it was so smooth and it had to stop at every gas station you saw, I was worried cuz when I bought it the owner was totally honest that it had 350k on the odometer, I beat the hell outta that truck for about 4 or 5 years using it to haul huge, heavy loads of scrap i beams and never had a minute of trouble from it, sold it it to another contractor that also beat the hell out of it for the next cpl yrs and after not seeing it around town for a cpl months I bumped into the guy and asked if it finally died and he said he'll no, that thing was a beast and ran like a top but some moron that worked for him somehow caught the engine compartment on fire trying to dump gas into the intake after letting it run outta gas, apparently he didn't follow the rule of stopping at every gas station it saw, I learned quick that pulling in the gas station and telling the attendant, ya give me 20 bucks worth of the cheap stuff was literally a complete waste of time, I owned it when Katrina knocked out the gas plants down south and gas was over 4 bucks a gallon, 20 bucks would literally get you to the next gas station if you were lucky and going downhill with a strong wind behind ya, lol. One of the best, toughest trucks I ever owned and belive me I was not kind to it ever a day in its life and I think I paid 3 grand for it and when I sold it I got 2500 for it cash after 4 or 5 yrs of faithful, trouble free daily duty, I was sad when I heard it burned up enuff that he junked it, it would probably still be running today cuz the guy that sold it to me gave me a xerox copy of a magazine article of a guy down south with the identical truck with a million miles on the original block, granted it was owned by a Ford mechanic but it made me feel good enuff to part with my 3 grand for a vehicle with over a quarter million miles on it which I would never do otherwise but it seems those cheap beaters are always the best buys that never let u down, no reason to use first gear, not even fully loaded and starting off on a steep hill, 2nd gear was strong as you would ever need, first gear was just overkill

Tough old 460. I've had 4 of them. Never failed me. My fuel injected '95 got 14 on highway. This older 460 did well, but by the looks of it, the tires were shot. Diesel looked well maintained. They all went over 300k miles with minimum maintenance. Better than the V10 that replaced it for sure.
